One gallery is a sample of photos of my Salem Oregon garden from 2007. The Second Gallery is from January 2008, mostly taken on January 1st. The third is the garden in February with the earliest taken on Feb 3. The next is March 2008 with photos taken from the 5th through the 8th. April's gallery has photos from early in the month and then on the 14th when we had near record highs (80) and the plants went nuts!! The last is various photos of family and friends including some from our 2007 trip to Maui for my 60th birthday. I would like to add a word of thanks to my wife, Denise, for her enthusiatic weeding, stick picking up, raking, pot planting, garden art buying and placement and all of the other help she provides.Enjoy what's here and what's to come!!

Winter Storm 2008 : This was the worst storm in the Northern part of the Willamette Valley in 40 years. It started with freezing temps into the low teens, followed by freezing rain followed by 16 inches of snow. There are pictures mixed in from all phases. My garden sustained some horrible damage - glad the garden tour was last year!! I've got some decisions to make on the birches and the Coral Bark Japanese Maple. I've pulled pictures from other times during the year for before and after comparisons.

Garden December 2008 : Well we made it, 12 months of the Garden. As we started we're ending with snow and cold. It's 33 now, but we're not going above freezing for the next week and, indeed, the prediction is the coldest weather in the last two decades or so - down to 15 degrees or so. I guess I'm going to lose some zone 8 plants this winter! I guess we'll see. It's been fun, not sure what I'm going to do next year but it'll be someting for sure.

Garden October 2008 : Fall is in the air - 38 Degrees as I start taking these photos. Went down to 33 so many of the non-hardy plants have been moved inside the greenhouse (not very warm thanks to the cost of propane) or the room I insulated last year in my outbuilding. Some nice fall colors, still a lot of blooms from the summer plants like Dahlias and Roses, some rebloomers still going strong and even some winter blooms from the primroses. Quite a mixed bag.

Hollyhocks, Euphorbia, Cape fuscias, Hibiscus, Daylillies, Liatris, Dahlias, Datura, Cannas, Callas , Agapanthus, Rudbeckia, Helianthus, Russian Sage, Hydrangea, Penstemon Crocosmia, and Monarda are a few of the stars in the garden right now. Had a wedding photoshoot on 8/8 for our neighbor Dave's daughter Heather. BEE ATTACK!! Trying to clean a waterfall and ran into a colony of Yellowjackets - got out with one sting! Guess the waterfall's going to wait a bit!

Roses are now blooming as are the climbing Hydrangeas and Cistus. Many Iris are going over but some Siberians are still blooming as well as some Bearded. The Japanese Iris have yet to bloom. The Pitcher plants (Sarracenia)are also showing their strange blooms.

Dale's Garden April 2008 : Bergenia, Grape Hyacinth, Daffodils, Forsythia, Heath, Hyacinth, Flowering Quince, Hebe, Magnolia, Osmanthus, PJM Rhododendron, Red Currant and Hellebores are all in bloom. The weather has been very cold with record low highs and night temps below freezing. I removed the wrapping on my banannas mid-March and I'm afraid I may have lost them. We'll see.
The weather got real warm the 13th and 14th and more plants came into bloom - Weeping Cherry, Wild Cherry, Camperdown Elm, Camellia and Bleeding Heart. Other plants expanded wildly and the pond was fired up - all 3 waterfalls going, filter cleaned and ready to go and the main fountain uncovered and running. Now we're talking!!
Last weekend 85 today (April 19th) snowing and 32! All the pots in the greenhouse for a week, RATZ!
